Clay Target League 2017

GMHS CLAY TARGET LEAGUE 2017

If your daughter or son is in grades 6 - 12 and is interested in joining the Clay Target League (CTL) team, please read on.

It's time to start thinking about GMHS CTL for 2017.  GMHS CTL had 19 members in 2014, 28 members in 2015, 30 members in 2016, and we expect this number will continue to grow in 2017.  Minnesota expects to have over 12,000 students participating in CTL this year, and soon it will be a rare school that doesn't participate in this new school sport.  The Minnesota State High School League now partners with the MN CTL and recognizes clay target shooting as a sport just like basketball, volleyball, track and football.  Girls and boys will have the ability to letter in the sport, be included in the school yearbook, and compete in a tournament to become state champions.

Student eligibility requirements include:

Must be in grades 6 through 12, AND

Must have a valid Minnesota Firearms Safety Certificate or the League's SAFE Certificate, AND

Must meet all GMHS extra-curricular activity eligibility requirements

Certified Firearms Safety Instructors Greg Lamp, Rodger German and others will coach the team again this year.

Cost to participate should be $200, which covers the cost of registration, shells and targets for all required rounds of shooting.  Extra practice rounds or participation in optional tournaments will be available, but are not required.

Typical required equipment will include a 12 gauge or 20 gauge shotgun in reliable condition, a shell bag or shooting vest, as well as hearing and eye protection.  Some of this equipment will be available for loan through the gun club.

The League will run two days a week from April 2 through early June and will require about two hours to complete the day's event.  Team members can pick whichever day works better for them and participate that day.  Years past, we've run the League on Sunday afternoons and Thursday evenings, but this can be adjusted if needed by the majority of participants.  We do have Mothers Day, Easter, and Memorial Weekend to deal with this year, and we may need to get creative to work around these special days.  All required shooting will take place at the Grand Meadow Gun Club just east of town. Participants will be responsible for transportation to shooting events.  At no time will participation in this sport alter current policy regarding firearms on school property!

There will be a team kickoff meeting for parents and students on Feb 18th at 10:30 in the High School Commons.  The purpose of this meeting will be to inform families of CTL details, select days and times to shoot, answer any questions, and start the registration process for those that want to participate.  Attending the meeting is not a commitment to join the team, we need that commitment and all registration done by March 6.
