FFA Soils Team Advances to State!

Grand Meadow FFA Soils Team Advances to State – Wins Regional Contest

The Grand Meadow FFA Soils team traveled to Lanesboro on Wednesday of this week scoring 1020 points earning them 1st place honors in the regional competition representing 32 schools in southeast Minnesota.  This year's team broke 1,000 points which is almost unheard of in this event.  The local team captured the top 4 individual scores with 2 of the alternate members also placing in the top 10.

Individual team members included: Luke Pecinovsky - High Individual, Matthew Koball - 2nd, Madison Kraft - 3rd, Laney Anderson - 4th, Benjamin Kraft - 1st alternate, Haily Hindt - alternate and Kameron Bacon-alternate.

The regional  event included the evaluation of 4 land sites determining: the 3 soil horizons, organic matter percentage, internal drainage classes, textures of each layer, % gravel if present, topography, steepness of slopes, land capability classes, interpretation of soil features, water holding capacity, erosion control, drainage practices, needed calculation of fertilizer and lime, and the suitability of each site for dwellings, lagoons and septic tanks.

The Grand Meadow FFA chapter is particularly proud of this type of training in their program because of the growing national interest in land use and water quality concerns and practices.

The local team will once again travel to St. Paul in April and give it their best shot on the State level.

Congratulations!
